Proposal Feedback!

UPDATE Please have your proposal revisions done before Monday morning.

We have noted which proposal you should move forward with below:

Ryan/Blake

Update: Sk8. We want you to pursue Sk8 with revisions... this could be an excellent proposal but suffers from some of the same problems as the first ideas - it still needs to offer a more direct response to the contents of the lectures. Forget logins or any web interface for this project. Keep it in the park! Can you for example help skaters at different levels (different "users") through different skate experiences (different "nav structures")?

Revise option #2 (title?) to meet the following:
As of now, this does not respond to the lectures. Review the lectures, revisit the idea and address various navigational structures and user types. This proposal is not outside of traditional expectations of what a designed artifact means nor does it use unconventional processes.

Nik/Veronica
Update: Urban Waste. The original proposal, being in the neighborhoods, was more inline as a "navigated" experience - than what has now turned into an installation. keep it in the streets.
Again, the original proposal did not need changing - but simply connected more directly to the lectures. How can you use the trash as indicators for different types of navigational structures (epp's lecture) and different user types (jamie's lecture).

Revise Urban Waste to meet the following:
As of now, this does not respond to the lectures. Review the lectures, revisit the idea and address various navigational structures and user types. P.S. We like the trash!

Barhop Code
Yes!

Update: Lord of the Dance. Please do this idea, but make sure it responds to the content of the lectures (how can nav structures like breadcrumbs and hierarchy as well as user types like searcher vs wanderer come into play on a navigated, drop-down [pun intended], flashin' light, block-rockin' beat, dance floor experience).

Re-propose both ideas or present two new ideas by Saturday 5pm. Idea#1 is too much about control and not about navigated experience. Idea #2 is beyond the scope of the project timeframe and your intentions are unclear.

Jessica/Kyle/Corie (who is team leader?)
Update: Q&A Booth. Do it!

Revise Jigsaw to meet the following:
As of now, you are proposing only one way and you need to address multiple navigational strategies and user types. Stipulation: Do not literally produce a puzzle piece.

Amy/Gentry/Genia/Logan
Update: Garage Sailing is approved based upon our recent meeting. Keep it in the project scope.

Update: Although interesting, and about helping a user navigate those sweet Saturday garage sales, Garage Sailing is not a viable idea for the time-frame of this project or feasible in terms of materials.

Re-propose Litterbox so it is a navigated experience (currently it only collects data). As of now, this does not respond to the lectures. Review the lectures, revisit the idea and address various navigational structures and user types.

McBride/Meredith/Cassie
Update: Good revisions on Event Finder. Because of our time-frame, be careful not to get in over your heads with generating too much content for users to navigate. Could there be other ubiquitous eveyday objects that could also carry the messages? Are the messages simpler? Like 1-3 events per sleeve?

Revise Event finder to meet the following:
As of now, you are proposing only one way and you need to address multiple navigational strategies and user types. This proposal is not outside of traditional expectations of what a designed artifact means nor does it use unconventional processes.

Not too sure what is meant by your stipulation however.

  2. It means don't literally make a puzzle or puzzle pieces, it's quite a banal idea. But, there's inherent qualities in the idea of a puzzle that can be played or expanded upon, for example that each needs the other to complete it, that there's a larger narrative when all come together.

  3. Well I am wayyyy confused as to what we are supposed to be doing then.

  4. Ryan, continue with your mapping concept, but bring a stronger and more direct correlation to the content of the lectures.

  5. We have come up with a completely new idea in place of the Litterbox idea.

    Garage Sailing

There isn't a consistent system in place for advertising and finding garage sales. What if you have a weather balloon that indicates your garage sale to everyone driving by the neighborhood? The balloon could be unique to garage sales so that people learn what it means. And once people find one garage sale, they find them all because every garage sale with a weather balloon info for every other garage sale with a weather balloon. Here's how that works: The weather balloons are rented from a place like Walgreen's. Anyone who rents a balloon is given a list of common garage sale items/categories to check mark and return. This information goes into a collective database of all the garage sales and then mailed or emailed to every garage-sale host in time for the sale. This information is made available to the visitors, either with handouts, or signs. That way they know what sales are in the area and where they can find what they're looking for.

  6. About the documenting, the thing is, we can't borrow cam recorders from the Media Center, Esp. at this time of the year with the digital new media kids being top priority.
I know this because for the KCAI expressional that I participated in last week, we were to document it via video but no one in that class was able to borrow one, only the professor was and that was for only a few hours. What do we do?

  7. Thanks for the heads-up Jessica. We will discuss this.

Regardless of the camera situation, the final documentation should not be a concern of any group at this point.

Currently you should be focusing on concept and the production of the experience itself.

    New idea #1. Quick Shop

In an attempt to navigate people on a tight schedule with a certain list of items in mind more successfully through a grocery store, we will design a mapping device to be attached to shopping carts/baskets. People don't have time to waste, especially when trying to make a speedy stop at the store to pick up a loaf of bread, grab a bottle of wine for dinner, find some allergy medicine, or get a frozen pizza. Grocery stores such as Sunfresh lack an effective signage system that tells customers exactly where things are located immediately when entering the store. We will be designing a Q&A guide attached to the carts/baskets along with the map that has questions like, "Are you sick?"- Isle 4, "Need a box of cereal?"- Isle 6, etc. We are navigating people through the store to help them find the item they are searching for (known item navigation). The map will allow them to become acquainted with where things are located for future reference as well. We will videotape random shoppers using the "quick shop" map and watch them navigate the grocery store based on our guide/suggestions. This concept may require lots of time, permission, and assembly to make happen.

    New Idea#2. Q&A Booth

We will construct 2 booths out of cardboard that will be set up at First Friday or also on campus. The first booth will have a "Q" labeled on it, with small slips of paper, and a pencil attached. The passerby will see instructions "slip question in here" and they will have to go to the "A" booth a 100 feet, or even a block away where their answer will be available. To direct the random participant into finding their answer, there will be instructions or colored lines drawn in chalk on the sidewalk. (multiple routes or options to get to a destination). The magic will happen with the help of a hidden person sitting in the "Q" booth who will text message the question (can be absolutely anything) to the person sitting in the "A" booth who will write the question down with an answer and eject the piece of paper out of a slot in the booth for the participant to receive once they make it to the booth. Q can't work without the help of A (input & output). Multiple forms of navigation will be going on here!

  9. Is it true that one man's trash is another man's treasure? Can you really tell what kind of neighborhood you live in by the litter around you? With the project "Urban Waste," we are proposing to create a navigational system of the Midtown/Westport area by diagramming with litter. We would like to know if trash is universal or varies by what kind of establishments and cultural environments surround it. Can it educate someone about the inhabitants' personalities and values? Are there different kinds of crowds during the different times of days? Can you identify the gender, identity, race, or personality of a stranger based on what is left behind? Or is it all just rubbish?

In this experimental interface we would have a direct option to search by neighborhood. Users could select "The Plaza," or "KCAI campus," or "Westport" and get links to a listing of trash in that area.
For the less direct user, a random assemblage of trash can be accessed and the user can click on pieces of trash to access information about when and where it was found. We would also allow for the trash to links to other information such as snippets of news or area restaurant reviews that users could upload and make additions to, allowing for high level of user cooperation in the development of content. To that end, we would also allow for user ranking. However instead of the usual number ranking, we would have users assign adjectives to describe the trash and the words that are most often used to describe the trash items would appear higher on the rank. Users could also search by these dynamic tags which would change as the interface evolves and gains more content.

You are now addressing the lectures with the addition of ranking, tagging, collaboration. However, the new proposal sounds more like a "website" - which the project timeline can not accommodate. Remember, you are to work outside of what a "traditional designed artifact" means.

  12. What we plan to do is go out to 15 city blocks in 3 different areas (5 each), pick up even amounts of trash, process, and redistribute litter in a new environment (kcai campus) with an added message (in the form of an eye-catching sticker-note) profiling where the trash came from and inviting the user to participate in an installation piece for the end of semester show to see how much of that waste makes it back to us.

    Concept #1 redux: Project Morpheus

How can we allow a user navigate through sleep? Sleep consists of falling asleep, staying asleep, dreams/nightmares, and waking up. We will provide users with the necessary know how to fall into a lucid dream so they can have control of their sleep experience. They will be allowed to dream as they wish and wake-up when they want to.

Concept #3: Lord of the Dance

This project will explore ways in which to allow the user to create their own dance. A night will consist of many variables such as, dress, location, company, time, mood (of dancer), season, etc each of these variables will have a different simple movement tied to it, and when added together it will help the user navigate their way aroun' da dance flo'. In other words they will create their own custom dance that is a visual representation of their situation.

Concept #4: The Coffee Project (a project about coffee)

This project will explore ways in which to make the coffee selection process more suited to the immediate needs of the user. We will provide the user with a cross reference with which they can decide what coffee is best for them based on factors such as: amount of sleep, destination, are they using to say up late, will they be eating, is it social, is it private (said in a whisper), etc. This way they will have a beverage that is suited specifically to their needs. So if you are on a social excursion to the coffee shop you will get a frappuccino as opposed to the sleepy-pants who needs a double americano with chocolate sauce.

  14. Jamie and Michael,

We did research and found out that Sunfresh will not allow us to do this experiment at their store. Which means, it's going to be extremely challenging to find any store that will allow us to video record inside of. So...guess we have to scratch this idea as well!

    Sk8 Exposed
Skate park goers will be able to see their, and other peoples, traveled path around the park. This will help skate park attendees decide what path(s) they should follow; as well as, how their own traveled path has visually changed over multiple sessions. A camera in the middle of the park will capture 10 minutes of movement in a singe image. The park goers will ware a colored light on them as they travel around the park so that their trail is visible in the image. Park goers will receive a light-color, (depending on their vehicle) and a login name and password. From their home they will be able to browse threw their own images, and images made by other professionals who have skated at the park.

  16. New Proposal for team King/McBride/Adams

Our audience includes weekly coffee drinkers whom inherently have an interest in activities throughout the city, but aren't always aware of the oppurtunities available for different areas of interest within their neck-of-the-woods. We are now proposing to create a filtering system that allows our user to find locations, activities or events(e.g. restaurants, museums, shops, outdoor areas, event venues, etc)within the Kansas City Area. These activities would specifically relate to a weekly topic or interest. For our first example, we're using music as the interest. We are proposing that this system starts by taking form on the surface of a to-go coffee cup and the heat protection sleeve that accompanies it. A list of locations, activities and events would be displayed upon the cup categorized by location (e.g. downtown, crossroads, westport, plaza, brookside, etc). there there would be a series of semi-transparent sleeves that would be designed with specific music genres on them (jazz, indie, rock, reggae, opera, dance, blues, etc.). By slipping the "jazz sleeve" on the cup, the transparency would reveal all the events, restaurants, jazz distributors, districts, bars, clubs, etc. that pertained to jazz enthusiasts and cover up the rest. This method of selection allows for coffee drinkers with various musical tastes to find out more about the music they like , where it exists within their city, and other places that facilitate their interests. They also have the opportunity of discovery by using genre sleeves they aren't already interested in. Each week there would be a new topic (eg. art, outdoors, culture, history, etc).
