:: Come prepared for a critical discussion about navigation at the project conclusion.
:: Each team member will evaluate the successes & failures of the project outcome, individual contribution to team effort, as well as your teammate's efforts. We will carefully considered these comments when grading (see provided evaluation form).

To begin, propose at least two equally viable concepts to your faculty for approval. For each, give a title and write one brief paragraph that outlines the idea and approach. Post proposals in the comments section here. Plus, list the members of your team and a designated team leader. Due today 5pm. We will approve a direction Friday evening.

Idea 1:
The user will be navigating through their personal spider web of locations lived along with secondary information about the physical traits of the user. Each users specific trait will be plotted on a thumbprint, in which will have hierarchal levels of information. The locations lived will be shown visually on a map with clear indication of when you lived there.
Idea 2:
Through a birds eye view the user will be able to see different areas of the city designated for transportation, residential and commercial areas. The user will be able to view all of the areas or individual areas at one time by selecting different options. Transportation will be divided into, pedestrian and vehicle permitted streets, sidewalks, railways, and subways. The residential and commercial areas will be divided into buildings and land owned. The user will be able to view the quickest route for a specific time during the day.

Idea 1-Urban Waste
Is it true that one man's trash is another man's treasure? Can you really tell what kind of neighborhood you live in by the litter around you? With the project "Urban Waste," we are proposing to create a navigational system of the Midtown/Westport area by diagramming with litter. We would like to know if trash is universal or varies by what kind of establishments and cultural environments surround it. Can it educate someone about the inhabitants' personalities and values? Are there different kinds of crowds during the different times of days? Can you identify the gender, identity, race, or personality of a stranger based on what is left behind? Or is it all just rubbish?
idea 2-MyStalker
Citizens of the world today have such a high comfort level with their internet presence that we tend not to be cognizant of the little details that we publish about ourselves that maybe shouldn't be accessible to the world at large. This navigation system would highlight the amount of detailed information by creating a parody on social sites such as MySpace and Facebook: MyStalker. We would track an imaginary person throughout their day, documenting their time spent and locations visited, both real and virtual. The target user would be a potential stalker who would have an easily searchable profile of our given target. Our fictional character would be built from real world examples (we'll Google ourselves and our friends) and we'll build a profile that's a hyperbole of what we find about ourselves.

Concept #1:
Mystery! - discovery through navigation
This project will explore ways to organize locations and events in order to uncover a crime. From a bystander's viewpoint, the user is presented with evidence, testimonies and suspects from a murder investigation. The user will be able to view the different aspects of the investigation: suspects, alibis, evidence, testimonies, etc. They could also view individual topics and delve deeper into it. Through this navigation, the user will try to determine what happened.
Concept #2:
Meal Time
This project will explore ways to help the indecisive and hungry person "navigate" their way toward randomized and creative meal decisions. The user will begin their planning by using an object to randomly select an option, deciding whether or not they'll be eating out, cooking, or ordering in. From here, the kit will direct them to a set of objects which they can either browse or pick through randomly. This will be a collection of local restaurants or ingredients at the grocery store. The process guarantees the ability to browse, as well as the option of a random meal every evening.

Concept #1:
A Race
Navigating physically through a space, a user is seeking out a code placed in the environment (a sticker, written with chalk, etc). This code is then texted to a number that then returns further information/options to the user on where to go next. Each found code functions as a checkpoint that records their time, and the end goal is to "win" the race—the best time wins. The course is planned-out, but the user has options to reach their destination.
Concept #2:
Barhop Code
An important part of bar hopping is knowing where to go, and this is often dictated by a bar's reputation. In reality, this information can get passed by word of mouth, but often never reaches innocent bystanders in time. If there were to exist a set of visuals to represent these "recommendations" or "tags", one might become aware of "shitty service" or "overpriced drinks" ahead of time. Through a learned barhop code a series of users would make marks in or around the bar to communicate in a silent and physical sense. The nature of bar hopping can be mimic the various approaches of web users (exploratory, know-item, etc), so to facilitate this in a real-world endeavor is interesting.

Concept #1: Project Morpheus
How can we influence a users navigation through sleep? Sleep consists of falling asleep, staying asleep, dreams/nightmares, and waking up. We will alter various conditions during the sleep process in order to guide the user through it. The navigational tools will be used in specific ways but not necessarily with a specified intent. We will manipulate conditions of their sleep environment as a way of altering their unconscious navigation. The space through which the user will be navigating is two fold: both the physical (bed) and the metaphysical (psyche or subconscious). The time will be the duration of the the sleep process. Either a quick nap or a full night of rest.
Concept #2: Project Minerva
How can we teach someone what different sensory cues mean in a way-finding experience, and how does that relate to memory retention? The purpose of this experiment is to find alternate methods of memory retention. There are two methods of memory navigation that we will explore. Method One: Helping someone navigate existing memories. Method Two: Helping someone prepare to navigate future memories more thoroughly. A user will be put in a position in which they must discover a specified location. Using non verbal cues we will guide them to the location. We will use the knowledge gained in these experiments to facilitate people in the navigate their memories.

ReplyDeleteIdea 1. The Long Way Around:
We will create a large scale, interactive maze constructed out of wooden stakes and caution tape (without writing on it) on the main campus green. We will be installing this life-size labyrinth on a week night (guerilla style) around the time it gets dark, so that people will discover it the following morning. We will include minimal directional signage to indicate interaction, but the user will have to find their way through the maze to reach the other side of the campus. We will be videotaping people interacting with the installation and once they make their way through the maze, we will interview them about what they took from the experience. Our concept is that by creating a physical maze for people to navigate through, we are giving them a start with multiple options of getting to a destination. Can a structured course created in a public space limit or add to the experience of navigation?
Idea 2. Jigsaw
We will create large (as big as we can make them) puzzle pieces out of foamcore or cardboard that will form a collective image. We will distribute the pieces either campus wide or to a community of young children. As part of co-creation navigation, the participants will be faced with the exciting challenge of putting the pieces together as a group project. Perhaps each department at KCAI will receive a piece, asked to decorate it as they choose and then meet on the campus green at a designated time to put the puzzle together. By putting the pieces together, we are also suggesting the idea of bringing all of the departments together at the same time to fit cohesively as a student body....OR.... With our connections to local youth organizations, we could have small groups of children decorate the pieces and then put them together. The completed piece will symbolize a physical, co-creative navigation system within a designated social community.

An idea: Find Your Butt
We select an area, perhaps a small vicinity on campus to collect littered cigarette butts every day. In their place we put a note that reads "go to the design building to see where this cigarette butt went." On the side of the building is a map created entirely out of the discarded cigarette butts. Every day as we add to the map, it will become more defined and recognizable as a map of campus.
Another idea: Litter Box
we pick a central spot on campus where a wide range of smokers dispose of their cigarettes. We build an ash tray with a gridded series of holes. The X-axis is what time is it? The Y-axis is what department are you from. The cigarettes represent the data. The data is what department smokes the most and what time of day smokers are in that location.

Concept 1:Chalk Mapping
Participants would be given a device with a piece of chalk attached to the end of it. The object would be to trace their routes throughout the day. Participants can interact with other "chalk maps", as well as outside people interacting with maps drawn. Possibility of personalization; color coding, mark making or use of symbols. Documentation methods would include photography, video, and web interaction.
Concept 2: Event Finder
We are aiming to provide a bored college student within the Kansas City area with possibilities to go out, have fun, and experience the city. A variable system would be implemented to filter out possibilities based on the users interests, budget, expectations, and desired setting. By giving them useful information about activities and specifying their limitations (example: no car, only five bucks, outside only, vegan requirements), the user can then spend less time figuring out what to do, and more time enjoying what they love.
